new Nikon D3400

Nikon has just introduced the new Nikon D3400 with 1080P video with a max frame rate of 60 frames per second. Sadly there is no 4K video on the Nikon D3400, though the 60 fps is nice in 1080p.

Nikon D3400The new 3400 has an Expeed 4 processor which bring an increased auto white balance and better low light photography. I cannot complain about better auto white balance as Nikon has been lacking in this area. Better low light photography in a camera this size is a big plus.

A 24.2 Megapixel sensor is found in the new Nikon D3400 with an iso range of 100 – 25,600. There is a 11 point auto focus system with up to 5 frames per second.

The real big news for Nikon is new lenses with ultra quiet focusing! The new Nikon AF-P DX lens which will be great for cinematographer looking for auto-focus. You can pickup the Nikon D3400 for $650 USD with a AF-P DX 18-55mm f3.5-5.6G VR lens. You can choose to get the AF-P DX 70-300mm  f4.5-6.3G VR lens for $1000. Not interested in the D3400, but interested in the 70-300mm lens alone? You can purchase one for $400 alone.

The ultimate Introduction to DSLR Filmmaking video

Here is a video on why to use a DSLR for filming! I am not affiliated with the Youtube user at all. So sit back and enjoy!

Some points that are mentioned are:

Most DSLRs have 24 frames per second just like you see in movies.

DSLRs have great depth of shallow which allow one object to be in focus while the background is blurred out.

A great example is this flower I took which has a great depth of field.

You can buy this flower as well as many other photos of mine here.

Colour correction is easy with video outputted from a DSLR.

You have great night video because of wide-angle lenses which allows you to shoot with a wide open aperture.

Night Time with DSLR with wide-angle lens and open aperture.

The v-blogger also talks about what aperture you should use, what shutter speed and what ISO to use. I suggest this video for beginners and any in between.

You can control your camera through either the iOS app or their Android app. This allows you to control the apeture, shutter speed, and iso preferences from your phone. What is also unquiet is Radian will update the settings in your camera every time to make sure your time lapse looks the best.

The specs of the Radian 2 are:

– 100 hours of battery life – charged through USB
– 150 lb stud pull length.
– 20,000 discrete positions in 360 degrees.
– 1/4″x20 mounting stud.

Now what might interest you the most! Pan, Tilt and Slide!

View post on

Though to get these features you will have to

Start with a single Radian for panning motion, and add an L-bracket for vertical tilting, or a linear adaptor kit for sliding.

Though the price to pan, tilt, and slide will cost you around $480 USD ($580 CAD).

You can create panning and tilting videos at 4.4 degrees per second.

I would like to say YES this works with Nikon Cameras.

Nikon Canada Service centres closing

Screen Shot 2015-04-29 at 1.35.34 AM

Nikon NPS Canada just sent this email to their current members – sadly all but one service depots will be closing:

The Canadian market is ever evolving and Nikon Canada continues to adapt in order to maintain our leadership position. In response to market changes, we will soon move to a centralized model for servicing our customers’ warranty and repair needs.

The key element of this change is the closure of our service depots in Richmond, British Columbia, and Montréal, Québec. Going forward, all customer service will be centralized out of our Head Office in Mississauga, Ontario.

As an NPS member, you will continue to receive expedited service on emergency repairs and we will maintain the 72 hour turnaround time from time of receipt. If we’re unable to service your product within that time-frame, loaners will be provided based on availability.

To assist us through this transition and wind down period we ask you to direct all repairs to our Mississauga Service Centre beginning from the date of this notice.

Nikon Canada customers have come to expect the highest level of service from us. With this change, we are reiterating our commitment to meeting our customers’ needs and exceeding their expectations.
